What is one of the earliest steps that a disciple takes in following Jesus? I suggest that it is reaching out and bringing someone along with as he follows Jesus. That is the pattern of Jesus’ first disciples and it is the pattern that Jesus set for all His followers.
When Andrew realized who Jesus was, he immediately reached out to his brother, Peter, to bring him along in following Jesus. The Bible says simply: “He brought him to Jesus” (John 1:40-42).
Later (Matthew 4:18ff.) Jesus called Andrew and Peter as followers and defined what that meant: “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” The definition is in the call. Being a follower of Jesus includes not only following Jesus but also being made into someone who “fishes for people.”
It’s important to note that Jesus called Andrew and his brother as a pair, then immediately added another pair of fishing brothers: James and John (Matthew 4:21). When Levi (Matthew) was called, what was the first thing he did? He threw a Jesus-party and invited all his low-life friends: tax-collectors and sinners (Mark 2:14ff.). Why? Because that was his call and that was his crowd.
Let me ask you a weighty question: Are you a follower of Jesus or just a fan? If you are a follower, then you are not only pursuing Christ and His mission, but also you are bringing others along with you. If you’re sitting on the sidelines and cheering Jesus and the fishing team on, you’re merely a fan.
This season of the year gives us great opportunities to invite others along in following Jesus. Listed below are some “inviting events” so let me ask once more: Who are you bringing?
