South Suburban members have been making week-long annual trips to the community of St. Francis, South Dakota on the Rosebud Indian Reservation since 2002 through The Lakota Journey (click on link for more information about this organization, which was founded by a former youth pastor of SSEFC).
St. Francis has a population of approximately 600 people and 38% of the population is under age 18.

Our annual trip in June involves youth entering 9th grade on up to adults of all ages. The ministry involves service projects and facilitating Kids Clubs in the afternoon at three locations within St. Francis. Kids Clubs engage the youth with crafts, games, conversation, a snack and a gospel-focused lesson. At dinner time all participants are brought to the community center for more interaction and a meal that is open to the community. Our team stays at the Sicangu Owayawa Oti (Rosebud Dormitory) in Mission, South Dakota — about a 30-minute drive from St. Francis.
